Ben Jones, a member of Cardiff CC, played once for Glamorganshire in 1861 against Carmarthenshire at Llanelly House, scoring 7 and 1.

Ben was a brisk round-arm bowler and in 1880, when he was in the veteran stage of his career, he claimed three wickets against the United South of England in their match against a Cardiff and District XXII at Cardiff Arms Park.

In August 1874 he had also played for the Bute Household XXII against the All-England Eleven in their three-day contest in Cooper’s Field, adjacent to Cardiff Castle where he was employed as a master painter. Given the ornate artwork in the Marquis of Bute’s home, it is likely that Ben assisted with the painting as well as in his Lordship’s other properties in the area.

Ben was also a member of the South Wales Cricket Club and played in their trial match during August 1880 against a Colts XXII at Cardiff Arms Park. He had been born on the Isle of Wight in 1833 and tragically he also died there, whilst visiting family in 1892.
